Hennie du Toit put a lot of effort into the training and preparation for the 2020 Absa Cape Epic.
But to be true to the challenge, this was a build-up of 5 years to this point, because one cannot train for the ABSA Cape Epic in 6 months or even a year. Hennie rode in excess of 2 548km with 26 850m of elevation since October 2019. He has participated in the Wines to Whales, Momentum Medical Scheme Tankwa Trek, presented by Biogen, and Imbuko Big Five Mountain Challenge, to name a few, in preparation for the Race That Measures All, due to start with registration on Saturday, 2020/03/14.
And then, on Friday, the 13th of March, at 19h27, a post on the Cape Epic Facebook page announced: The 2020 Absa Cape Epic is cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Soon other events followed in the Cape Epic’s footsteps, and were cancelled, like IronMan, Two Oceans and many more.
Within one week, life as we knew it, changed completely.
Diverso wants to take this opportunity to thank everyone who contributed in many ways to the dream – the support, the sponsorships, the Facebook, Strava, Garmin, Zwift likes and comments, Hennie du Toit’s partner, Jaco Kotze who trained with him, and Hennie’s family who supported him through a very difficult time.
A special mention to the following sponsors:
- Diverso Technology
- Konica Minolta South Africa
- Ikon Office Technology
- Absa South Africa
- Cycle2Ride
These are very disappointing and uncertain times, but let us take up the challenges together and make the most of the hand we are dealt by standing together.
